1975年8月13日，美国堪萨斯州托佩卡市的一群左撇子建立了名叫“左撇子国际”的组织，他们设想把全世界的左撇子联合起来，共同争取左撇子的权益。一年后，该组织举行庆祝活动，并将这一天确定为国际左撇子日，希望有朝一日全世界的左撇子一起庆祝自己的节日。1976年的8月13日就成为第一个国际左撇子日。随着时间的推移，国际左撇子日逐步得到世界各国left-handed（右手人称之为right-handed）组织的承认，纷纷开展庆祝活动。
1992年，英国伦敦left-handed club也将8月13日确定为国际left-handed day，并于当年举办他们的第一届International Left-Handers Day庆典。在英国并设立了International Left-Handers Day专门网站，宣传International Left-Handers Day、普及Left Handedness知识、介绍每年的Left Handers Day活动安排、报道世界各国celebration activities。
Left-handers宣言，他们建立International Left-Handers Day目的在于团结worldwide left-handers for the fight for their interests, to raise awareness of the issues related to left-handedness in a society predominantly right-handed, and to remind people that there are still biases against left-handers created over centuries in various cultures. Now, there are dozens of countries' left-hander organizations celebrating this day across the globe. Europe is a hub for these celebrations.
The current world population has approximately 10% who prefer using their left hand. However, no one can precisely explain why someone becomes a southpaw. It's believed that genetic factors may play a role or it could be influenced by family dynamics; twins have an increased likelihood of both becoming ambidextrous or one being southpaw and the other not.
In a world where most people use their right hands, "southpaws" remain outcasts and victims of prejudice and discrimination. In life habits, cultural beliefs etc., they always seem at odds with this right-hand world but facts show that many exceptional talents flourish among those who wield their power with their non-dominant hand. History shows how important contributions from Southpaws have been to human civilization while contemporary Southpaws impact on social-economic life far exceed their proportion in population numbers.
As we celebrate International Left Handed People’s Pride Month during Easter season when hope springs eternal let us remember our own place within history’s grand tapestry weaving stories together as diverse threads yet united under one roof—our humanity—while cherishing our unique identities like precious gems shining brightly amidst glittering stars lighting up an otherwise dark night sky.
