One, The Application of Colors in Yi Tribe (I) The Colors in Yi Epic and Literature
In the epic poem "Shi-zu" and "Luo-te-yi", it is mentioned that all things in the world are born from snow. In "The Evolution of Heaven and Earth" section, it says: "The first generation of heaven and earth was chaos; the second generation was a misty fog on earth; the third generation was water turning into gold." In "The Twelve Branches of Snow Tribe", it tells us that animals originated from bloodless snows, while plants came from blooded ones.
According to Mr. Liang Guang's translation of famous epic poem "Ancient Marquis", it records: "The land produced four wooden gods, four fire gods, ten iron gods to divide heaven; they could not create living beings. Finally, they sent down ten water gods to heaven; yellow white fog rose up from heaven and fell as three colors of snow." This led to rabbits, butterflies, frogs becoming white-snow ancestors; monkeys snakes became red-snow ancestors.
Yi tribe has a unique concept towards color based on their history. White represents purity while yellow symbolizes prosperity and good luck. Red signifies life force.
In literature such as Cong-shu (), there is a record about different tribes wearing clothes with different colors: East dwellers wear blue clothes with blue hats or ride blue horses holding blue staffs waving flags made out of cloth dyed with indigo or azurite dyeing process which turns them into green-blue color for decoration purposes.
In other words:
Red represents victory.
Yellow means wealth.
Black indicates mourning.
Blue denotes tranquility.
These colors have been used consistently throughout history for various occasions like weddings ceremonies where people dress up in red garments during festivities whereas black is worn during funerals.
It can be seen that Yi culture uses color symbolism extensively whether its through clothing or other forms like pottery painting etc., these symbols hold deep significance within this community as an expression & representation if their beliefs & values system over time which has evolved but still maintains its core essence intact till date due mainly because these were passed down generations by word-of-mouth rather than being written down so preserving cultural heritage quite well despite changes brought forth by modernity.
